Correspondences

This is an experimental series of digital collages.

It brings together two distinct worlds: the details of my "inner landscapes"—my abstract paintings—and photographs that capture the "outer landscapes" around me. This series seeks to discover the hidden "correspondences" that exist between these two realms.

It is a search for the subtle echoes and visual rhymes that emerge between the painted mark and the natural form. By juxtaposing these two realities, a third, hybrid space is created—a world where the boundary between the internal and the external, the made and the found, begins to blur.

"A digital collage from the 'Correspondences' series by Asahi Tanaka. This artwork is a diptych, split horizontally. The top section is a photograph of dark eucalyptus branches with rounded leaves against a cloudy, grey sky. The bottom section is a close-up detail of a heavily textured abstract painting, showing scraped layers of dark navy blue and off-white paint. The composition juxtaposes the organic forms of the plant with the abstract, material texture of the painting, creating a visual dialogue between a natural scene and a man-made surface. This experimental digital artwork is from the 'Correspondences' collection by Asahi Tanaka."
"A digital collage from the 'Correspondences' series by Asahi Tanaka. This artwork is a diptych, split vertically. The left section is a close-up detail of a mixed-media abstract painting, showing large black splatters and gestural, curved white lines on a highly textured, metallic silver and grey surface. The right section is a photograph of the aftermath of a bonfire, featuring a chaotic tangle of charred wood, grey ash, and dry leaves. The composition juxtaposes the abstract, man-made textures with the organic textures of the burnt debris, finding a direct visual correspondence in their shared monochromatic color palette and complex, chaotic patterns. This experimental digital artwork is from the 'Correspondences' collection by Asahi Tanaka."
"A digital collage from the 'Correspondences' series by Asahi Tanaka. This artwork is a diptych, split horizontally. The top section is a photograph of a dilapidated building with weathered, blue corrugated metal siding that is peeling and rusting in places, revealing the wooden structure beneath. The bottom section is a close-up detail of a heavily textured abstract painting, with layers of blue, black, and white paint that appear scraped and weathered. The composition juxtaposes the architectural decay of the building with the abstract texture of the painting, creating a direct visual correspondence through their shared color palette and worn, multi-layered surfaces. This experimental digital artwork is from the 'Correspondences' collection by Asahi Tanaka."
"A digital collage from the 'Correspondences' series by Asahi Tanaka. This artwork is a diptych, split horizontally. The top section is a close-up detail of a monochromatic abstract painting, featuring a heavily worked surface with scraped grey and white paint, chaotic black lines, and black splatters. The bottom section is a photograph of a narrow, ascending paved path at night, illuminated by an unseen light source that reflects on the wet ground. The path is flanked by a dark stone wall on the left and deep shadows on the right. The composition juxtaposes the abstract, textural chaos of the painting with the gritty, linear perspective of the path, creating a visual correspondence through their shared monochromatic palette and the directional energy of the lines and textures. This experimental digital artwork is from the 'Correspondences' collection by Asahi Tanaka."
"A digital collage from the 'Correspondences' series by Asahi Tanaka. This artwork is a diptych, split vertically. The left section is a close-up detail of a heavily textured abstract painting, featuring a pattern of scraped vertical white lines over a multi-layered surface of blue and dark paint. The right section is a black and white photograph of a Catalpa tree (Kisage), focusing on its long, hanging seed pods, which are highlighted by sunlight to form strong vertical lines. The composition juxtaposes the abstract, man-made pattern with the natural forms of the plant, creating a direct visual correspondence through the shared, dominant motif of repeating vertical lines. This experimental digital artwork is from the 'Correspondences' collection by Asahi Tanaka."
"A digital collage from the 'Correspondences' series by Asahi Tanaka. This artwork is a diptych, split vertically. The left section is a close-up photograph of ripe, red bayberries (Yamamomo), showing their distinctively bumpy, spherical texture as they hang from a branch. The right section is a close-up detail of an abstract painting, featuring a large, vertical, organic splatter of dark blue paint on a light-colored, scraped background, surrounded by smaller splashes. The composition juxtaposes the natural texture of the fruit with the abstract texture of the splattered paint, creating a visual correspondence between the two distinct organic forms. This experimental digital artwork is from the 'Correspondences' collection by Asahi Tanaka."

"A digital collage from the 'Correspondences' series by Asahi Tanaka. This artwork is a diptych, split vertically. The left section is a close-up detail of a heavily textured abstract painting, with a pattern of scraped, vertical white and blue crayon lines on a dark, multi-layered base. The right section is a high-contrast photograph of the artist's own shadow, along with the shadow of a plant, cast onto a rough concrete surface in direct sunlight. The composition juxtaposes the abstract, man-made texture of the painting with the ephemeral, figurative form of the shadow, finding a visual correspondence in the shared verticality and the high-contrast textures of both images. This experimental digital artwork is from the 'Correspondences' collection by Asahi Tanaka."
