This painting was made with a flat surface in mind — suppressing strong movement, keeping the picture plane as even as possible. Within that restraint, colors and marks in pink and wine red rise slowly to the surface, quietly present rather than assertive.

Into that evenness, a single piece of collage was introduced. Not to break the flatness, but to place something slightly foreign within it — a small departure, held inside the calm.

A desire for flatness runs through much of my work, but here it was brought forward deliberately, as the central intention of the painting.
