At first glance, this painting reads as a simple composition of black and yellow. But a Croton leaf is hidden within it. At the start of the painting, a full-scale copy of the leaf was collaged near the center of the panel. By the time the work was finished, it had almost disappeared — though the distinctive variegated pattern of the Croton can still be faintly traced beneath the surface.
